The Kansas School for the Deaf uses a variety of norm and criterion referenced assessments to monitor student achievement.

Kansas State Assessments

In the spring, the school administers the annual State of Kansas assessments in the areas of reading and math to students in grades 3 - 8 and 10th. The science assessments are given to grades 5, 8, and 11 while the social studies assessment is given to grades 6, 8, and 11. The assessment window opens in mid-March and closes at the end of April.

Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) Assessment

The MAP tests are norm-referenced, computerized assessments administered in the subject areas of reading, language, math, and science. MAP tests are based on a continuum of skills and assist teachers in identifying the instructional level of the student and also provide context for determining where a student is performing in relation to national norms. The MAP assessment is used to:

  • Monitor academic growth over time;
  • Provide data for classroom, school, and district decision-making; and
  • Identify students for appropriate instructional programs

KSD begin testing students using MAP in Reading and Language in grades 3 through 12 in the fall of 2014. These computerized assessments are adaptive, presenting questions of varying degrees of difficulty. The questions adapt (become easier or harder) to match each students individual instructional level.

Students are tested twice a year, in the fall and spring. They receive a score called the RIT score. This is a scaled score which can be compared year to year. The school uses the MAP assessment to measure growth over time.

Curriculum-Based Assessments

Teachers administer a number of curriculum based assessments in their classrooms. These criterion-referenced assessments measure individual progress through the curriculum and are aligned with instruction.

Batteries of assessments are also given prior to the student's annual IEP to determine their Present Level of Educational Performance (PLEP). The results of these assessments are shared at the annual IEP meeting with parents, students, and LEAs. Annual goals are written and updated quarterly. IEP Assessments are developed to measure the student's quarterly progress.

American Sign Language (ASL) Assessments

Students are assessed in both expressive and receptive ASL using several instruments. The KSD Visual Listening Assessment (VLAT) was developed during the spring of 1994 and updated in the summer of 2018. It was developed by the staff at the Kansas School for the Deaf for the purpose of assessing deaf students' visual attending comprehension in American Sign Language.

Students are administered the VLAT every three years as part of their Comprehensive Evaluation.

To measure student's expressive competency in ASL, the Kendall Conversational Proficiency Rating Scale is administered. The assessment focuses largely on the child's expressive competencies in conversational situations across various settings, such as the hallway, cafeteria, and classroom. Students are given a rating on a scale from 0 - 7. Those students receiving ASL tutoring services are assessed annually using the P-Levels. Recommendations are made for teachers to recognize the visual attending skills that students need. Bilingual specialists analyze the results and create recommendations for the teachers.
